Varicose veins are often enlarged and over time can appear ropey under the skin. Incompetent or leaking valves cause the enlargement. This is known as venous reflux disease and can lead to symptoms including pain, swelling, aching legs and skin disorders.
Q. How do I know for sure if I have varicose veins?
Only an ultrasound diagnosis can determine the presence of varicose veins (venous reflux disease). Your free initial consultation with the Doctor will include a vein screening exam, including an ultrasound. Based on the findings, the Doctor will discuss the right treatment options for you.
Q. I would like to get rid of my varicose veins and I’ve heard about the new laser treatments. How do they work?
Using ultrasound guidance, a catheter is inserted into the saphenous leg vein. A laser fiber is then inserted into the catheter and heat energy is delivered, resulting in closure of the diseased vein.
Q. How long does the procedure take?
On average, it lasts about 30 minutes. Once the procedure is complete, the blood in your diseased vein is rerouted to healthy veins. A small bandage is placed over the insertion site and support stockings are applied.
Q. Is it painful?
In properly trained and experienced hands, there should be no pain. This minimally invasive procedure, in conjunction with Dr. Amalfitano’s expertise, provides a safe and comfortable experience. A painful experience is the most common reason people switch from other vein centers to Amalfi.
Q. Who performs the procedure?
This is an important question. Vein treatments are essentially non-regulated. That means many Doctors with no formal training in vascular disease are conducting treatments. Dr. David Amalfitano is a Board Certified Cardiac-Vascular Surgeon. His expert knowledge of the vascular system makes him the most qualified physician to perform laser therapy.
Q. When can I go back to work?
Walking is encouraged after the procedure and you may return to work the same day!
Q. How effective is the procedure?
The Endovenous Laser Procedure is a safe treatment for varicose veins. It has been proven highly effective for the treatment of venous reflux disease with a reported 95-97% success rate at a 12 month follow-up.
Q. Will my insurance cover the procedure?
Varicose Vein problems are a medical condition covered by most insurances. The friendly staff at Amalfi will work with your insurance company to get you the help you need.
